I couldn't help watching this documentary on clinical neurologist Oliver Sacks from PBS's American Masters, without thinking of the contributions of researchers, clinicians, and most importantly patients, students, and individuals wrestling with the myriad diagnoses and conditions affecting mental health. My notes from watching this are a smattering of snapshots from Oliver Sacks' life: the periodic table as a bedsheet, a love of numbers and minerals, Oxford educated, an obsession of the human brain, timidity & shyness, an understanding of himself through the ups and downs of drugs, a search for identity, and a motorcycle driven at full speed. His fascination with people's experiences, his interest in their way of ordering the world, and his love of the human condition, however raw and exposed, drove him to a creative and atypical approach to interactions with patients, coworkers, and friends.
